Tips for Night Riding

With the arrival of summer, the weather is getting hotter and hotter. The cool night has become a time period for many riders to go out and ride. Avoiding the impact of the hot sun, more cool and comfortable, but there are also some problems of riding safety and equipment selection.
Mountain bike night riding can be roughly divided into three categories: the first is the most conventional road riding, which is commonly known as brushing the street; the second is “practicing moves”, a piece of open space, where people get together to toss about some basic skills and fancy movements; the third is the most special and noteworthy mountain crossing night riding.

However, no matter what type, we should pay attention to the following three points!

1. Wear adequate and appropriate personal equipment (safety equipment)
First of all, no riding without helmet. Helmets can save your life at a critical time. So no matter what kind of riding, you should wear a riding helmet.

Even if only a few friends go out and slowly riding on the road and street, please put on your helmet (many kids who play in the mountain area will have a bad habit. They don’t wear helmets when riding on the roads and streets, but please wear helmets for safety).
Secondly, riding glasses are also very important equipment for night riding. The author suggests that qualified riders should wear transparent lenses or night goggles when riding at night. In addition to the conventional wind protection, the most important is to avoid catkins, mosquitoes and others fly into the eyes.

The rest of the equipment depends on the type and intensity of the ride. For example, if you riding on the road and street, you can use the most basic equipment; for mountain riding, you should wear full helmet, knee protection, elbow protection and back armor according to the road conditions.

2. Lighting and warning equipment
Lamp and tail lamp are very important equipment in night riding, and also important guarantee of riding safety. It is mainly composed of front lamp, tail lamp and reflective clothing. Mountain riding at night has very high requirements for headlights, as high as possible lumen number, as wide a range of exposure as possible, stable fixed mode, sufficient endurance… This also represents a higher price, but it is very worthwhile for safety. In addition, the author suggests that on the basis of the front lights, additional head lights can be added to allow the driver to observe the road conditions earlier and clearly and make a response.

The tail light doesn’t illuminate the road in front of you like the front light, but it is a very important warning device, which can let the vehicles and team members from the rear know your position clearly, so as to avoid more dangerous situations. Now many taillights are also very intelligent. They can work by themselves and have the function of brake lights. Of course, the tail light is not exclusive to night riding, but also has a very good warning effect during the day.
Besides lamps and lanterns, there are additional safety equipment such as reflective clothing, riding clothes with reflective function, etc. The role of these clothing equipment is to inform other road traffic participants of your presence and location, to avoid some accidents.

3. Heatstroke and mosquito prevention

Summer night riding is really comfortable, but mosquitoes are very annoying. Therefore, it is very important to spray mosquito repellent water and wear mosquito repellent Bracelet before departure, especially for mountain cycling, where vegetation is dense and there are more mosquitoes. After all, no one wants to “feed mosquitoes” .

In addition, although it is night, but the temperature is still not low, the work of heatstroke prevention is still important. It’s very important to keep in good condition, wear cool clothes and bring things to reduce the heat.
